Texas is a no income tax state. Other things like food, utilities, etc. are much cheaper in Texas, but it is hard to add those things up. Taxes are easy to count. We also considered Texas (Austin, to be exact), but went Florida because it made for better flights to Italy, where our travel business operates. I'd bet that if you really sit down and do the math, your $1,000 figure is low. Then again, mine is based on being in Florida, a zero income tax state. We are both engineers and we were making about $180,000 per year in California. We moved to Texas and make the same money. However, we figure we save easily $1000/month in taxes and the house we bought here is very nice and costs us $1433/month (taxes and insurance included). We couldn't rent a two bedroom apartment for that in California. In short, California is a one word IQ test. the correct answer is Leave (though Texas or Florida would be acceptable alternative answers). My wife and I were in a similar position.
